Communications Apprentice

Job Introduction

Do you love storytelling, creative content and social media? Are you curious about how great communication can shape experiences, build trust and bring brands to life? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity to kickstart your career in communications!

Let us tell you more…

Your work will help us share the amazing things happening across Yorkshire Housing — including how we support communities and give people a place they’re proud to call home. As a not‑for‑profit organisation driven by social purpose, everything we do aims to make a genuine, positive impact.

Your main focus will be on customer and digital communications — creating content, supporting campaigns and helping shape our social media presence. But you won’t be limited to just one area. You’ll also get the chance to support PR activity, internal comms and events, giving you a broad understanding of how the whole Communications & Brand team works together and how your work contributes to the bigger picture.

You’ll be supported every step of the way with on‑the‑job training from experienced comms professionals, plenty of space to learn and grow, and a brilliant team who’ll cheer you on as you go.

What qualification will I be working towards?

You’ll be working towards a Level 4 PR & Communications Assistant qualification.

This will involve:

  • Completing blended online learning one day per week
  • Working on real communication projects to build your skills and portfolio
  • Completing all assignments, assessments and apprenticeship requirements alongside your role

What will I be doing?

You’ll be supported, mentored and encouraged as you develop your confidence and capability across the full comms mix.

Here’s some of what you’ll be getting involved in:

  • Creating clear, engaging written and visual content for different audiences
  • Planning, scheduling and monitoring posts across our social media channels
  • Filming and editing short videos on mobile devices for digital campaigns
  • Supporting the delivery of customer communication campaigns and keeping things on track
  • Researching audiences and helping shape messaging that really lands
  • Helping monitor media and social activity and identifying opportunities
  • Supporting PR events or activities as they arise
  • Contributing to internal communications, especially during key Yorkshire Housing moments
  • Helping the team plan and deliver events and engagement activities
  • Providing admin support including organising meetings and capturing actions

This role comes with an agile homeworking contract — so you’ll spend most of your time working from home. You’ll join one team meeting per month, and you’ll have the freedom to collaborate with colleagues whenever people are in the office. It’s very flexible, and we trust you to work in a way that suits you.

You’ll also get the chance to travel across Yorkshire — visiting sites, schemes and new developments to capture content, film stories and see our work in action.

As you grow in the role, you might be asked to take on additional responsibilities that support your development and broaden your experience.

What you’ll bring to the role:

We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, creative and ready to dive into all things comms. You don’t need previous communications experience — we’ll teach you — but you should have a spark for storytelling, digital content and connecting with people.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 5 GCSEs (C/4 or above) including English and Maths
  • 2 A‑Levels (A–D) or equivalent
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A willingness to learn, be curious and get stuck in
  • Comfortable using digital tools and trying new ones
  • Ability to build positive relationships
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Initiative, professionalism and integrity

If you’re reading this and thinking “I don’t meet every single requirement” - don’t let that put you off. We’re interested in potential, attitude and willingness to learn just as much as experience.

To get started on this apprenticeship, you’ll need to:

  • Be 16 or over on 7th September 2026
  • Be able to live and work in the UK, and have lived here for the past three years
  • Not already have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or higher
  • Not be in full‑time or part‑time education when your apprenticeship begins
